Congratulatory messages continue to flock in for renowned South African, actor Dr John Kani, who was recently awarded the Order of the British Empire by King Charles.
The accolade is one of the most prestigious honours awarded by the UK and recognises individuals for their outstanding achievements and service across various fields.
It is part of Kani’s long trail of awards he has received over the years, including the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, which was bestowed by then President Thabo Mbeki.
Speaking to YNews, the renowned actor has encouraged young people to refrain from seeking accolades, but rather prioritise excellence in their respective crafts, which will open more doors for them.
The multi-award-winning actor, director and playwright has encouraged Yires, who aspire to enter the arts space, to believe in themselves.
He believes the fire of self-belief is what carried him throughout his 59-year-old career. He’s also urged directors and fellow actors to consistently open the door for the next generation.
YNews also reached out to a few actors and directors, who have been fortunate to work and learn from Dr Kani and they all spoke highly of him.
Legendary actor and director, Tony Kgoroge, says he admires how bab’John, as he fondly refers to him, always goes deeper when storytelling and directing.
The internationally acclaimed actor says Dr Kani never shies away from pushing the envelope.
Kgoroge says Dr Kani remains his principal as continues to learn from him.
He also cherishes how the Black Panther actor encouraged education, which benefitted him immensely.
Young actress, Rori Motuba was the assistant director for August Wilson’s Fences play at the Joburg Theatre, which featured Dr Kani.
She describes Kani as one of the founding fathers of not just the South African but African Art.
Veteran of the arts, Dr Jerry Mofokeng waMakhetha, says he hopes young South Africans learn what it takes to have longevity in their career from the legendary Kani.
Speaking to YNews, the world-renowned TV and theatre actor cited the 80-year-old’s humility as one of his distinct values.
Young Uzalo actor, Vusi Mdiniso, says Dr Kani taught him the importance of being disciplined as an actor; to push boundaries and not to limit himself as an actor.
The young actor says out of all the artwork he has been involved in; Kani’s Island play remains the most prominent.
He advises Yires to immerse themselves in their craft and always make sure that they are ready for an opportunity to showcase their talent.
