New Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, has labelled the club’s 10 season long trophy drought as unacceptable.
The Tunisian addressed South African media addressed South African media for the first time today and was brutally honest in his assessment of the team and where it finds itself.
Amakhosi returned to South Africa from their pre-season camp in Turkiye on Wednesday and are set to face Tanzanian giants, Young Africans SC, in the inaugural Toyota Cup in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
“I would like to thank the owner of the club, Mr Kaizer Motaung, Jessica, Kemiso, Mr Bobby and Kaizer Jr for their warm welcome,” he said at the club’s base in Naturena.
“I’d also like to thank all Kaizer Chiefs fans for their warm welcome at the airport and I’ll do my best to reward them for the warm welcome with a great season this year.”
The Tunisian did not hold back on his thoughts on how Chiefs have fallen from glory.
“Looking at the name Kaizer Chiefs and how big the club is in South Africa, it’s most definitely unacceptable for a club not to have a title in nine years,” said Nabi through his translator.
“Especially because the club has the biggest fans and the biggest ground in South Africa, as well as in Africa,” he added.
The coach has also pleaded for patience from the club’s supporters.
“I need to pull the club back to where it’s supposed to be. We need a very realistic strategy to help the club, and we need to be honest with ourselves and our supporters themselves. We need to look at our quality without emotions, we need to look at what we have currently without being emotional.”
Chiefs will play their first official match of the season in September after missing out on the MTN8, which will start next month.
