Wimbledon Women’s Wheelchair Doubles champion, Kgothatso Montjane, hopes that her latest victory will give South African wheelchair tennis a boost.

Montjane arrived back home this morning to a warm welcome from her family, sponsors and the media after her and her double’s partner, Yui Kamiji, won the final on Sunday beating the Dutch pair of Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen 6-4 6-4.

The 38-year-old, who hails from Seshego, Polokwane, is currently ranked Number 1 in South Africa in the women’s disabled division and has earned numerous accolades both locally and internationally, solidifying her status as an inspiring sports icon.

“This victory is just to make sure [that] the legacy of wheelchair tennis exists. I’m sure you all know the struggle for us as wheelchair tennis athletes in the country, we’re still pleading for support to get our programmes back on track. I just do it to keep the legacy alive, until we get that support,” Montjane told journalists.

Sport Minister, Gayton McKenzie, has joined South Africans in congratulating the three-time grand slam winner.

“Kgothatso, we are so proud of you, and I hope that other young players take great inspiration from your success, both in the wheelchair discipline and the sport as a whole,” said Mckenzie.
