Judicial watchdog, Judges Matter, is calling on Parliament to create a Code of Conduct for both the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Magistrate’s Commission.
The advocacy group wants measures to be put in place to bar individuals found guilty or implicated in ethical misconduct from serving in the cited commissions.
Its call comes hot on the heels of the news that impeached former Western Cape Judge President, John Hlophe, is one of the MPs nominated to serve in the JSC.
The former Judge President, who boasts 29 years of experience in the judiciary, was impeached in February for gross misconduct – becoming the first judge to be stripped of his title since the dawn of democracy.
While Hlophe has expressed interest in taking up the position,
Judges Matter’s Research and Advocacy Officer, Mbekezeli Benjamin, says the JSC and the Magistrate’s Commission must be held to higher ethical standards.
