The family of Busisiwa Nxumalo, a domestic worker who was tragically murdered, says they’re distraught and frustrated that her body was returned to them without any clothing.
Nxumalo was allegedly killed by her employer, nurse Sithembile Xulu, in a murder plot aimed at collecting a hefty R6 million insurance payout.
It’s alleged Xulu took out three separate life insurance policies on her young domestic workers life.
She and her gardener, Simon Mogale, are accused of slitting the young woman’s throat and dumping her body near Lenasia.
They appeared before the Lenasia Magistrates Court yesterday on fraud and murder charges.
Nxumalo’s family has since spoken out about the disturbing circumstances surrounding her death and the handling of her body.
YNews spoke with her uncle, Njabulo Nxumalo, outside court.
He revealed that when he asked about the cause of her death, he was told that she was beaten by community members for being “troublesome”.
He claims that Xulu avoided calls from the family after the incident and did not follow through on promises to assist with funeral arrangements and the washing of her body.
The uncle suspects foul play, believing that Xulu took out insurance policies on his niece with the intention of killing her, because she would have informed the family of the policies if her intentions were genuinely to help.
He expressed the family’s distress and trauma, at not being able to perform certain rituals and retrieve her spirit from her place of death, adding that they still don’t know where her clothes are.
Nxumalo is adamant that something sinister took place and is demanding swift justice in the case.
The matter returns to court next week Wednesday, the 3rd of July. Written by Naomi Kobbie
