The Proteas are through to the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after winning an eventful Super Eight clash with the West Indies, which ended the co-hosts’ campaign in the early hours of Monday morning.
South Africa won yet another tight one and secured progression to the knockout stages of the tournament, entering the final four unbeaten.
They scraped home against a spirited Windies side that never gave in, sealing victory with five balls to spare and running out of batting options.
Despite the tight finish, the Proteas were on top for most of the must-win clash, which started at the toss – opting to field first at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
South African captain, Aiden Markram, handed Marco Jansen the new-ball and the quick delivered, as Shai Hope was lost for a first ball duck. The skipper had just as much success next over, tempting Nicholas Pooran who skied one down the ground – it was well held by Jansen.
Jansen should’ve had a second dismissal, bowling to Roston Chase, but Anrich Nortje put down a tough chance with the ball swirling high in the wind. Chase took full advantage, compiling a Powerplay fightback with Kyle Mayers.
The Windies made it to 47/2 at the six-over mark, capped off with a Mayers maximum on the last ball of the sixth over.
Player of the Match Tabraiz Shamsi took 3-27 after South Africa won the toss and restricted their opponents to 135-8.
“The last time I played here I went for 50 runs and there was a lot of chatter going around,” said Shamsi.
“I was happy to come back and perform my role, but credit as well to the guys who bowled before me because they set it up beautifully.”
Winning captain Markram admitted to nerves during the tense chase.
“There’s a lot of relief at making the semi-finals but we’re not going to be brainwashed by that because we would have liked to be a lot more convincing,” he said.
“Maybe we tried to kill off the game too early, but that’s been the story of the competition so far.
“We get ourselves into tricky positions and then have to battle to get over the line.”
South Africa join England as the semi-final qualifiers from Super Eight Group 2.
