Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Rhulani Mokwena, has come to the defense of defender, Mothobi Mvala, who was responsible for the error that saw Sundowns lose their unbeaten league run on the last day of the season.

Sundowns lost 1-0 to Cape Town City on Saturday in the season finale after Mvala took his eyes off the ball to leave Jaedin Rhodes clear on goal in the 61st minute to dampen the Brazillians’ celebrations at Loftus Versveld.

The record league champions will have very little time to feel sorry for themselves as they have another tough assignment on Saturday afternoon, where they will face off against defending champions, Orlando Pirates, in the Nedbank Cup final.

The rumble will go down at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, in a repeat of the MTN8 final, which the Buccaneers won on penalties.

Mokwena was quizzed about the Bafana Bafana defender’s error after the match.

β€œHe knows that I love him like I love all my players. We all make mistakes and I make more mistakes than anyone else and it’s part of football you know,” said the mentor.

β€œMy perspective is completely different from a lot of people’s perspective. When people see mistakes, I see 29 games of incredible effort and that is the perspective I choose. He will definitely see it the same way I see it because he will get the emotions from me.”
