Education lobby group, Equal Education, has highlighted the need for more data collectors to be hired at schools in order for government to urgently address issues plaguing the country’s schools.
EE is attributing the Department of Basic Education’s challenge to ensure clean water and sanitation at all the country’s schools to the lack of sufficient clear data or inaccurate data results.
The lobby groups was reacting to the story about a Mahikeng school, in the North West, where the lack of water last week resulted in the toilets being flooded with worms.

Speaking to YNews,  Equal Education national organiser, Zanele Modise, said this is not an isolated case.

She says in Limpopo teaching and learning at some schools periodically have to be paused for learners to go relieve themselves at home.

Modise says DBE has, in some instances, made empty promises to deal with such issues.

For its part, the North West Department of Education blamed Stage 6 load shedding for the Connie Minchin Primary School worm breakout.

Educational spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, says while some parents had raised the alarm over the situation there, teaching and learning was not disturbed.
