Friends and family of Kamogelo Moepye have raised the alarm following allegations that the 26-year-old teacher had been involved in a heated argument with her former lover on the night she suffered third degree burns.

The high school teacher succumbed to her injuries weeks later while still in hospital.

She was at her estranged partner’s residence when tragedy struck and he is understood to have been outside as the home caught fire.

In an exclusive interview with YNews, Moepye’s friend Charmaine Mahlangu says she’s not convinced that the death was an accident.

Mahlangu says the circumstances shrouding the 26-year-old’s death do not make sense.

She says she remains suspicious, especially since the ex-boyfriend has not been seen since the gruesome incident.

Moeype was honoured at a memorial service in Benoni yesterday.

As a video montage of some happier moments in her life played out – several learners, who were overcome with emotion, began hugging and comforting one another.

And as heartwarming tributes continue to pour in for the late teacher, her loved ones and colleagues, have urged young women to be more selective of the people they allow into their personal lives.

William Hill Secondary School principal, Lionel Singh, says young women should feel free to walk away from any relationship.

He further emphasised that good social values should be incorporated into school curriculums, with young men and women receiving further education around gender-based violence.

Moepye’s family maintains that she was murdered by her former lover and is calling on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter.
