Celebrations all round as Banyana fly the SA flag high

Millions of fans around the globe continued to celebrate the African champions throughout the day on Wednesday, after the teamโ€™s historic march in the FIFA Womenโ€™s World Cup.

Banyana Banyana are through to the last 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating Italy 3-2 at the Wellington Regional stadium this morning.

Needing nothing but victory, Banyana came back from one- nil down and defeated Le Azzurre to book themselves a spot in the last 16, becoming the second African side after Nigeria to book a spot in the knockout stages.

Banyana striker Hilda Magaia says she had to deliver for the team.

Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, has praised her charges for giving a performance of their lives at a crucial stage of the tournament, proving their status as African Champions.

This is Banyana Banyana’s 2nd appearance at a FIFA Women’s World Cup with their first appearance being in 2019 in France.

They have made history in South African football, both men and women, by becoming the first team to qualify for the knockout stages at a FIFA World Cup.

Banyana Banyana tore the form book apart by beating higher ranked Italy to book a place in the second round, where they will face Netherlands on Sunday, 6 August 2023 in Sydney, Australia.

SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan, joined by Minister of Sports, Art and Culture Zizi Kodwa, PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza and regional body COSAFA, have joined the world in celebration by sending congratulatory messages to Banyana Banyana for this mean feat. Article by Kamogelo Mogale
