Mamelodi Sundowns lifted their sixth consecutive league title on Tuesday night following their 1-1 draw with Maritzburg United at the Loftus Versveld Stadium in the DStv Premiership, in what was the final league match of the season for both sides.

Sundowns won the league title as early as March with 7 matches left to play in the season.

They finally got their coronation following their stalemate with the Team of Choice. It was also coach Rhulani Mokwena’s first league title as sole head coach.

“My players are good footballers and that makes it easier for us. We are privileged as the technical team to work with this group of players. As demanding as this job is, it is moments like these that make it extremely rewarding. We are so proud to be league champions and I am proud for the team and everybody associated with this club,” said Mokwena.

Earlier in the day the Sundowns squad had been at the funeral of the club’s late Supporter’s Mobilisation Manager Alex ‘Goldfinger’ Shakoane.

“It was a difficult day for us. This is for Alex and it is a title we will remember for years,” added the coach.

Masandawana finish the season on 70 points with 21 wins from 30 matches.
