Born in Alexandra Johannesburg, South African vocalist, rapper, producer, DJ and songwriter Marcus Harvey embarked on his musical career as a teenager under the stage name Hipnautik. He garnered local attention in the township through his music, which led to him signing with Indie record label, Tales Of The Cool Music (which he co-owns).
After moving to Dennilton, Mpumalanga with his siblings where he lived with his grandmother, growing up Marcus remembers his mother as a big fan of artists like Brenda Fassie, Winnie Mashaba, Dolly Parton and Michael Jackson. All these artists have a very huge influence in and on the sound produced by Marcus.
At 14, he began his musical career. He started attending open mic sessions alongside Buhle Chonco, professionally known as Pimp Push. Marcus Harvey attended Minerva High School where he began participating at Thusong Youth Centre for illustrations. In 2014, he failed a grade, which led him to drop out of high school in early 2015. Many may not know but Marcus began his music career as a producer and a House music DJ.
His singles include ‘Mosadi’ featuring KAEB and ‘Find Your Love’ featuring Zimkitha. He credits his mother, Brenda Fassie and Winnie Mashaba as sources of influence.
He has released an 11-track debut album called ‘I Am Marcus Harvey’ which is available for streaming on various platforms and features such songs such as ‘Areyeng’, ‘Be Right Back’, ‘Send Me To My Love’, ‘Whatever You Want’, ‘Find Your Love’ and ‘Alright’.
Marcus believes the album reflects the trials and tribulations of young people as well as issues of love and loss, with a strong sense of identity at its core.
Listen to Marcus Harvey’s music on The Global Experience hosted by Just Mo every Sunday, 2PM-6PM.
