Suspended Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, has taken full responsibility for the decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in KwaZulu-Natal, saying he was sober and fully aware when he issued the directive.<\/p>\n

The embattled minister is currently facing tough questions from Members of Parliament in the ad-hoc committee probing allegations of political interference within the police force.<\/p>\n

Mchunu was placed on special leave after KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi implicated him in facilitating corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS).<\/p>\n

The disbandment of the PKTT has been a bone of contention since Mkhwanazi’s explosive July 6 media briefing.<\/p>\n

Mchunu told parliamentarians that the task team no longer added value and consumed a large portion of the department\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n

Mchunu, who issued the directive on New Year\u2019s Eve while the Provincial Police Commissioner was on leave, is accused of being influenced in making the decision.<\/p>\n

He however says he never discussed the matter with his colleagues in the cabinet or police service.<\/p>\n

Mchunu further told the committee that President Cyril Ramaphosa agreed to the disbandment of the task team and was briefed about it afterwards.<\/p>\n\t

    Political analyst, Mpumelelo Mkhabela, says the burden of proof regarding allegations made by Mkhwanazi rests squarely on Mchunu.<\/p>\n\t

      Mchunu has also been accused of having close ties to controversial North West businessman, Brown Mogotsi and murder suspect Vusimuzi \u201cCat\u201d Matlala.<\/p>\n

      It is alleged that Mogotsi acted as a middleman between Mchunu and Matlala allegedly facilitating the exchange of confidential police information for funds used to support ANC operations.<\/p>\n

      Mchunu volunteered to disclose his own illegal conduct of instructing his Chief of Staff to record the conversation with Mkhwanazi without his knowledge.<\/p>\n
