Businessman and President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s nephew, Hangwani Maumela, is once again under scrutiny following an explosive Special Investigating Unit<\/a>\u2019s (SIU) report on the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.<\/p>\n

The SIU uncovered three major syndicates responsible for looting over R2 billion intended for public healthcare, including one directly linked to Maumela.<\/p>\n

He is reported to have secured contracts worth R816 million, with luxury assets valued at around R520 million.<\/p>\n

These assets have now been seized by the SIU as part of ongoing efforts to hold those involved accountable.<\/p>\n

The SIU uncovered widespread fraud at the Tembisa Hospital after investigating 2,207 procurement files, which showed that service providers were irregularly appointed.<\/p>\n

So far, 207 service providers are being investigated for more than 4,500 purchase orders, many linked to fake bidding processes.<\/p>\n

Officials from the Gauteng Health Department and the hospital are accused of taking bribes and engaging in money laundering and procurement fraud.<\/p>\n

The SIU says it has also reviewed over 1,700 bundles worth R816 million, identifying 41 service providers \u2014 with some contracts linked to controversial businessman and attempted murder accused Vusi \u201cCat\u201d Matlala.<\/p>\n

The ongoing investigation at Tembisa forms part of a joint investigation by the SIU and the Office of the Premier into allegations of mismanagement, fraud, and corruption in supply chain management dating back to 2019.<\/p>\n

The irregularities were first brought to the fore by whistle-blower Babita Deokaran<\/a>, a senior Gauteng Health official who was shot dead outside her Winchester Hills home in August 2021 after uncovering tender fraud worth millions at the hospital.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the SIU\u2019s briefing, Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi said her killing highlights why South Africa should reconsider the death penalty.<\/p>\n

He slammed Deokaran\u2019s killers, saying they live lavishly while innocent lives are cut short \u2014 adding that such cases make him understand why countries like China impose capital punishment.<\/p>\n\t

    The unit says it has also identified current and former officials implicated in wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

    To date, the SIU has prepared 116 referrals for disciplinary action to be instituted against 13 officials, of which to date 108 were delivered to the GDOH relating to maladministration and the irregular appointment of\u2026<\/p>\n
