Local businesses and taxi drivers in Johannesburg have welcomed the reopening of Lilian Ngoyi Street, after a two-year closure.<\/p>\n

The street, formerly Bree Street, was severely damaged by a methane gas explosion in July 2023, which killed one person and injured 48 others.<\/p>\n

A local business owner noted that the two-year reconstruction period had kept customers away, as the road closure made it difficult for them to access shops along the street.<\/p>\n\t

    Taxi driver, Michael Matolomphekgwane, expressed relief at the reopening but voiced concern that the street’s reduced size will still negatively impact business.<\/p>\n\t

      The reopening marks the completion of the first phase of reconstruction, which cost over R90 million and faced delays, including disputes with the initial contractor.<\/p>\n

      The city has announced that the second phase of the R192 million project will begin soon, with a remaining budget of R110 million.<\/p>\n

      This phase will focus on beautifying the precinct with new greenery, street furniture, and other enhancements.<\/p>\n
