State witness and investigating officer, Nceba Diko, painted a grim picture during his testimony. He told the court that the post-mortem revealed \u201ca deep skull injury, swelling, bruises, cuts, and blood on Jayden-Lee\u2019s lips.\u201d<\/p>\n
Strikingly, there were no signs of defensive wounds, raising concerns about how the fatal injuries occurred.<\/p>\n
The court also heard that police found a towel with what appeared to be blood in the bathtub of Meek\u2019s Fleurhof flat – yet it was never collected as evidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt simply didn\u2019t cross my mind,\u201d Diko admitted under questioning.<\/p>\n
This admission became a cornerstone of the defence\u2019s argument that police failed to follow proper procedure.<\/p>\n
The atmosphere shifted in the courtroom as defence lawyer, Noven Naidoo, began cross-examining Diko.<\/p>\n
He launched a scathing critique of the investigation, arguing that critical evidence was overlooked and suggesting the state\u2019s timeline of events was speculative at best.<\/p>\n
He also questioned why Meek\u2019s phone was still in police custody and not yet presented as evidence.<\/p>\n
Time of death still unknown\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nAdding to the growing uncertainty, it was revealed that neither the post-mortem report nor the attending doctors could confirm Jayden-Lee\u2019s exact time of death.<\/p>\n
Naidoo used this gap to argue Meek had a solid alibi during the estimated window police provided.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou say the child died between 4 and 5am, but my client was still in Florida at the time,\u201d he told the court.<\/p>\n
Just as court was set to adjourn on Wednesday, Diko introduced new evidence – Jayden-Lee\u2019s schoolbag, previously sealed and unexamined. When opened in court, it revealed schoolwork written in Afrikaans, which Diko claimed showed the boy had attended school on the day he went missing.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis teacher said he wore a red tracksuit, his mother said long grey pants, and the security guard reported black shorts,\u201d Naidoo pointed out, adding that Diko had no clear explanation for the contradictions.<\/p>\n
