Gauteng police have launched an investigation into the deadly chaos that broke out at Schaumburg Combined School in Hartbeespoort last week.
According to reports, four unknown boys allegedly entered the school by breaking through a fence at the back of the premises and began attacking learners who had just finished writing their exams.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says the situation quickly escalated, with younger learners joining the commotion as the chaos spread across the school grounds.
Three Grade 12 learners and one Grade 10 learner were hit by a bus as the driver attempted to flee the scene.
Gauteng Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, says the matric learner succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Sunday.
“At the bus loading area, the situation escalated further as some learners allegedly attempted to forcefully take control of buses. Emergency medical services were immediately contacted, and the injured learners were transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” Steve said.
Mabona added that the department will continue working closely with law enforcement to ensure appropriate action is taken against those responsible for instigating the violence.
