Gauteng residents have been warned to expect possible traffic disruptions across the province as South Africa prepares to host the G20 Leader’s Summit this weekend.

Traffic in Pretoria and Ekurhuleni is also expected to be affected, with full road closures already in place around Nasrec.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says officers remain on high alert and are monitoring major routes, including the R21 and R24, which are being used by many of the international delegates arriving in the country.

“On Nasrec road we’ve got a limited and soft closure. That’s from the N17 traffic circle to the Shaft 17 Road and then of course a full closure between Shaft 17 and Rand Show Road. We are also monitoring other areas within Johnnesburg. There are protest marches which have been happening aswell. We are also monitoring roads which are being used by heads of states, mainly the R21 and R 24 routes,” Fihla said.

Several international leaders and delegates have already arrived in South Africa ahead of this weekend’s summit.

Among them are UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Guterres has urged G20 leaders to use their influence to push for peace in conflict-stricken regions across the globe.

Speaking at Nasrec earlier today, Guterres said the world needs decisive action to end the wars driving widespread death, destruction and instability.

He has called for an immediate halt to the flow of weapons and fighters into Sudan, efforts to address the root causes of unrest in the DRC, and strengthened security measures in the Sahel, among other priorities.

The Secretary-General added that peace is needed in Gaza as well as an end to ceasefire violations
